Lager brands may hold the
top four places in this year’s Top 100 Drinks survey, but the pressure is on
from branded wines and the fastest-growing premium packaged spirits category.
The Top 100 Drinks survey
which is based on exclusive data from ACNielsen will be published
in this week’s Checkout magazine.
Peter
Crean, business manager of ACNielsen says, “The
top 20 drinks brands remain relatively unchanged this year, with the exception
of two new entries. The first is Blossom Hill, which has seen a 103% growth in
sales, resulting in it being placed in 16th position, the second is
Rosemount, with a 50% increase in sales placing it in 19th position.
Interestingly, the entry of these two brands means that there are now six wine
brands in the top 20, something that would have been unthinkable just a few
years ago.”
The
growth of wine brands, and New World wines in particular, has been the most
spectacular long-term development in the drinks market in recent years. UK wine
drinkers are more knowledgeable about wine than ever before and are increasingly
more likely to plump for a chardonnay or cabernet sauvignon rather than a
straightforward white or red.
Stephen
Foster, editor of Checkout, said: “Lager and wine brands continue to be the
sales stars of the UK take home drinks market. Lager has long since taken over
from ale as the nation’s most popular style of beer. Led by Stella Artois,
lager brands now occupy the top four best-selling positions in a Top 10 which
also includes the E & J Gallo and Jacob’s Creek wine brands, and for the
first time, a premium packaged spirit, Bacardi Breezer.”
“However,
it’s the premium packaged spirits brands which have made the most dramatic
impact on the Top 100 this year. Brands such as Bacardi Breezer, Smirnoff Ice
and Archers Aqua have established themselves as fast-growing siblings of their
parent brands, Bacardi, Smirnoff and Archers. The challenge for the premium
packaged spirit makers will be to sustain growth in this category for the
long-term, but also stimulate interest in the main brand.”
