EUROPE: Manufacturers Agree To Stop Promoting Junk Food Online
Online food and drink advertising in Europe is set to undergo a
significant shift, after 19 major manufacturers agreed to promote
only nutritious products through their websites. The move brings
web-promotions under the ambit of a 2007 deal under which the firms
agreed to drop junk food ads in TV or print.
The commitment, facilitated by the World Federation of Advertisers,
includes firms such as Coca-Cola, Kraft, Nestlé, Procter & Gamble,
and Mars. The firms account for 80% of food advertising in the EU,
and the WFA said the “world first” pledge aims to “help foster an
environment, which supports - rather than undermines - healthy
lifestyles”.
