UK: P&G Selling Products Through Facebook

Max Factor has become the first Procter & Gamble brand to sell directly to consumers via social networking site Facebook (www.facebook.com/MaxFactorUK). An application on the site, powered by Amazon, lets people comment on and ‘like’ Max Factor products, as well as purchase them.

The move is the first time P&G has let UK consumers buy any of its brands via a social network, and is part of what the company calls “small-scale direct-to-consumer” initiatives it’s currently testing.

UK: Retail Sales Receive Welcome Boost From World Cup

Retail sales volumes received a World Cup boost in June after strong sales of electrical goods drove a faster-than-expected 0.7% monthly rise, official data out today showed. The Office for National Statistics said sales volumes rose 1.3% on the year, also faster than the 1.0% gain expected after an upward revision to May's monthly reading to 0.8% from 0.6%...more »


UK: Cost Cuts Help Offset Weak Sales At Kingfisher

Kingfisher, Europe's biggest home improvements retailer, said it was on track to meet first-half profit expectations, with cost cutting and business improvement measures offsetting a dip in sales. UK: Marks & Spencer Voted Britain’s ‘Most Trusted’ High Street Retailer

For the second year in a row, Marks & Spencer is Britain’s most trusted retailer, according to a YouGov survey commissioned by integrated marketing communications agency Baber Smith.

The Insight Survey by Baber Smith, which this year explores consumer trust in the retail and financial services (FS) sectors, reveals M&S as the most trusted retailer in Britain with 39% of consumers rating it as one of their top three most trustworthy retailers. John Lewis (26%) and Boots (23%) complete the top three in the trustworthy stakes. Tesco’s dominance of the supermarket sector (according to the survey, 82% of consumers have used the supermarket in the past 12 months) fails to translate into trust, coming one place and 1% behind Asda (at 20%) in fifth with 19%..

FRANCE: Casino Loses Monoprix CEO

Charles Bouaziz who was appointed as CEO of the Monoprix chain a few months back, has resigned from his post, citing personal reasons. Bouaziz, who was earlier President of PepsiCo’s Western Europe division, will be replaced by Financial Director Stephane Maquaire.

AUSTRALIA: 7-Eleven Gets Approval For Mobil Deal

The Australian competition regulator has approved the acquisition of 296 Mobil fuel stations by 7-Eleven and Peregrine. The deal will see 7-Eleven acquiring the outlets for an undisclosed sum, and then onselling 29 outlets in South Australia to Peregrine.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission said the move will not substantially reduce competition, adding that 7-Eleven has agreed to on-sell three of the service stations, while Peregrine will divest one.
