The head of the French supermarket chain Leclerc has stated that he believes a move into France by the Wal-Mart group is inevitable, as the process of Europeanisation of the food retail sector continues. The company points to the major Europe-wide brands in other sectors, such as pharmaceuticals and manufacturing, as the model for future food retail development. Leclerc is well-placed to cope with such developments, claimed a spokesman, and will be active in maintaining its position.
