Sainsbury's own label toilet rolls and tissue products are set to become more eco-friendly. The chain announced yesterday that they will now be made from either recycled paper or material approved by the Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC). The scheme will mean some 191 million toilet rolls and 76 million kitchen rolls sold by the chain annually becoming “greener”. Around 85% of Sainsbury's own-brand wood-fibre products, which also includes tissues, will be recycled or FSC-approved from May this year. This should rise to 100% at a later date, to include paper tableware and other home accessories.
Supporting the scheme, a Greenpeace spokesman called on other retailers and tissue brands to follow suit. “Consumers will be able to buy these own brand products safe in the knowledge that they are not contributing to ancient forest destruction,” he said.
