UK: Tesco Hires Former Shoplifter To Combat Rising Theft

Tesco has hired a former shoplifter to combat rising theft at its stores. The reformed crook - who used to steel up to £600 of goods a day to feed his drug habit - features in a staff-training DVD called ‘Eyes Wide Open’. It is part of a £4m initiative by the retailer to help staff spot suspect behaviour.

Shoplifting is said to have sharply increased during the recession and Tesco has stated that the goods it loses to shoplifting could fill 13,500 trucks. The DVD shows the ex-crook walking round a store with the manager and highlighting valuable goods with high selling potential, like alcohol and cheese.
