J.C. Penney has announced that it plans to stop publishing its half-yearly ‘big book’ catalogue, saying it will instead focus on its online offer and specialised catalogues. The group also noted that dropping the catalogues will save 25-30% in paper used for next year’s catalogues.
In a statement, the department store chain said, “To ensure we are keeping pace with consumers' changing media habits and continued migration to online versus catalogue shopping, we have increased our investments in new technologies. Part of this transformation is the refocusing of our catalogue operation to smaller, more targeted publications”.
The move will only serve to highlight the increasing important of online shopping in today's retail scene, as well as to showcase the diminishing importance of traditional catalogues - something that German retailer Quelle could agree with. It could also be a catalyst for other retailers to perhaps follow suit, if Penney manages to successfully use the money it saves to boost its sales.
