The first national wine retail chain has been launched in Ukraine, under the ‘Polyana’ banner. The chain, which is the first local retailer to specialize in selling wines and other alcoholic drinks, is expected to have seven outlets operational by the end of 2009.
Reports said the stores will carry about 2,000 items, including French and Italian wines, liquors, cognacs, brandy, whiskey, gin, grape-brandy, Armagnac and beer. Local products will account for about 25-30% of the total product mix, but will rise up to 70% in categories such as vodka.
An executive from the chain was quoted as saying, “Most of the local population is very sensitive to price, so there is a possibility to launch a 3-tier pricing policy, which assumes a different value for each alcoholic drink with the purchase of 1, 3 or 6 bottles”. He added that Polyana will have its own pricing policy, which could help customers save up to 23%, depending on the number of drinks they buy.
