Grocery retailer Guyenne et Gascogne has seen its first-half sales rise by 5.1% to E278m, helped by strong fuel sales (turnover was up 1.4% excluding fuel).
The group said that its supermarkets and mid-size hypermarkets in France showed strong growth, although its larger outlets continue to struggle, hurt by the low demand for non-food. Sales were up 9.1% at its supermarkets, while the hypermarkets grew by just 1.4%.
In Spain, its Centros Commerciales Carrefour unit saw hypermarket sales decline by 3.4% to E4.03bn, while supermarket sales were down 5.1% to E345.1m. Meanwhile, its Sogara subsidiary saw revenue drop by 2.3% to E753.6m, affected by weak sales of apparel and tough regional competition.
The group said it expects further growth in the second half, adding that results will be boosted by full deployment of the Carrefour Market network in October. In Spain, the group plans to focus on “applying an aggressive pricing policy” to counter the downturn in consumer spending.
