US: Amazon Revamps Website Ahead Of Tablet Launch

Amazon has begun rolling out a redesigned website to some users, in a move that is widely being seen as a precursor to the launch of its upcoming tablet. The company has admitted that only some users can currently see the new site, with a spokeswoman adding: “We are continuing to roll out the new design to additional customers, but I can't speculate on when the new design will be live for everyone”.

The website offers more white space by reducing the number of buttons and other navigational elements. The biggest change includes the elimination of the left-hand column, which lists the various portals for digital and physical items. A single horizontal column now lists all of Amazon's digital offerings, below a larger search bar on the new version of the homepage.

The new version of the site will allegedly serve as the official page for both PC and tablet viewers. Smartphone viewers will see a separate version of Amazon's redesigned page.
