Brazil has once again been declared the most attractive of all emerging retail markets in the world, according to the annual report by AT Kearney. The Latin American country topped the ‘Global Retail Development Index’, which ranks the top 30 developing countries for global retail expansion, for the second straight year.
Brazil was followed by on the Index by Chile (unchanged from last year), China (up three spots), Uraguay (down one spot), and India (down one spot). The rest of the Top 10 included three new entrants – Georgia (#6), Oman (#8), and Mongolia (#9).
Several countries in the Middle East/North Africa region were affected by the ongoing turmoil of the Arab Spring, with Tunisia slumping by 12 places to #30, Lebanon falling 10 spots to #22, Morocco down seven spots to #27, and Kuwait also down seven spots to #12.
A.T. Kearney noted: “Given the accelerated growth rates of developing countries compared to the anemic growth in European and North American markets, global retailers must have a strategy for expansion into developing markets. In the past five years, Walmart, Carrefour, Tesco and Metro Group saw their revenues in developing countries grow 2.5 times faster than in their home markets.”
