Majid Al Futtaim has this week opened its first Carrefour hypermarket in Kenya. The French retail group’s franchise holder for the region said its entry into the market marked a significant milestone in its major expansion plans for the African continent.
The entry of the retail giant is expected to intensify competition in the market and comes after Massmart, a subsidiary of Walmart, opened its first store in Kenya last year.
The new Carrefour hypermarket is located in Nairobi within the newly opened Hub Shopping Mall in the Karen suburb. It is sells more than 30,000 items, including fresh produce and groceries, a fresh bakery, home appliances, electronics and general merchandise.
Franck Moreau, Country Manager, at Majid Al Futtaim – Retail Kenya said: “At Carrefour, we are committed to offering the best price and best merchandise in a pleasant shopping environment because we are in the business of creating great moments for everyone everyday. We want to meet the needs of our customers who are in pursuit of a shopping experience that will leave them happy and coming back for more. We are also pleased to see the benefits of Carrefour’s presence in Kenya through job creation and support for local producers. We have so far recruited just over 200 staff members at the Hub hypermarket and by the end of 2016 Carrefour Kenya will have a solid staff base of 500.”
The group said it is already working with more than 480 suppliers, local manufacturers, producers, and farmers across Kenya, adding that it prides itself in upholding the highest international standards and best practices. This includes ensuring positive supplier relations through on-going training and engagement and enhancing supplier efficiency.
