Woolworths Ltd has opened its first formal convenience store format, in a move that pits it directly against the 7-Eleven banner.
The first outlet, located in York Street, Sydney, covers 310 sq. m. and offers coffee, sandwiches, sushi, and a small range of dry groceries. It operates under the ‘Metro’ banner, of which there are 15 other stores in the country.
Woolworths noted: “We’re listening to our customers and adapting our offer to suit how our busy customers want to shop. Our new Metro store on York Street is about to open offering choice and convenience including lots of ‘grab & go’ meal options for breakfast and lunch, and full meals for dinner. The store’s range will also mean customers can do smaller mini-shops or ‘top-up’ shops.”
The group said it plans to open more such stores throughout NSW, Victoria and Queensland, and will soon open in other CBD and urban areas in both Melbourne and Sydney.
