INDIA: Amazon Confirms Additional $3bn Investment

Amazon has formally announced that it plans to invest an extra $3bn in its Indian operations, confirming reports from last year.

Speaking at an event attended by the Indian Prime Minister, CEO Jeff Bezos said the move will take Amazon’s current investment in the country to just over $5bn.  He added: “I can assure you it’s only the beginning and as we say in Amazon, it’s only day one”.

Bezos added that India was the company’s fastest-growing region, and said the new infusion would go towards helping local start-ups, the opening of a Web Services Cloud Region, and a new software engineering and development centre in Hyderabad.

Amazon has been aggressive in its plans for India, having built 21 fulfilment centres, tying up with the national India Post service, and pushing deep discounts to capture market share from domestic market leader Flipkart.

NAM Implications:
  • Bezos “I can assure you it’s only the beginning and as we say in Amazon, it’s only day one”, has to be a major indicator of Amazon’s ambitions in India…
  • If in any doubt, re-read the above details and ponder on scale…
