Shiseido has announced the acquisition of Gurwitch Products, the owner of Laura Mercier and RéVive, for an undisclosed price. The deal was made by the Shiseido Americas subsidiary, which bought the cosmetics and skincare marketer from Alticor.
The Japanese group said that the acquisition of Gurwitch, which generated sales of $175m in 2015, is part of its ‘Vision 2020’ growth strategy. It also noted that the Laura Mercier and RéVive brands are “highly complementary” to its own portfolio, adding that the deal will help widen its consumer reach while strengthening its presence in the prestige cosmetics category.
Shiseido added that the deal will also benefit the Gurwitch brands by providing them with a global platform that will speed up growth in developed markets. It also expects the brands to benefit from its Global Centers of Excellence (for skincare, colour cosmetics, and digital) and its Americans Innovation Center.
- Interesting how aggressive Japanese, Chinese, and Korean groups are being in the EU/US acquisition sphere
- Worth some what-if scenario building around Shiseido’s ‘Vision 2020’ growth strategy, on the part of NAMs in appropriate categories?
