US: Walgreens Ends Theranos Tie-Up

Walgreens Boots Alliance has formally announced that it will be ending its existing partnership with blood-testing service Theranos.

The move will see WBA shut down the 40 Theranos Wellness Centers at its stores in Arizona, with the drugstore giant adding that it will work to help transition customers.

Walgreens also noted that tests collected at the Arizona stores will be sent only to a Theranos-certified lab in the Phoenix area or to an accredited third-party lab for analysis, with no samples being sent to the company’s lab in Newark.

The decision follows lawsuits against Theranos for misrepresenting the accuracy and quality of its blood tests, conducted via its Edison device. The company has been accused of endangering the health of customers and violating clinical-laboratory regulations.

NAM Implications:
  • A signal that WBA are dropping blood-testing…
  • Or perhaps developing a baggage-free alternative offering…?
