US: Walmart Tempts Shoppers Ahead Of Amazon Prime Day

Walmart has rolled out several new shopper-friendly features in the US, as it looks to negate the impact of Amazon’s annual ‘Prime Day’.

For the week of 11 July to 15 July, Walmart has done away with the minimum-$50 requirement to qualify for free shipping (this extends to all online shoppers).  It has also cut prices on several products online, including popular electronics and electricals. Walmart said the online rollbacks will be “extended offers”, without specifying a time period.

The moves come as Amazon gets set for its Prime Day event today (12 June), and build on Walmart’s recent deal through which it is offering a free 30-day trial for its ‘ShippingPass’ programme.

NAM Implications:
  • Being ignored by the competition was always worse than retaliatory moves…
  • i.e. shows that Walmart are bothered enough by Amazon to care…
  • Meanwhile, scope for suppliers to optimise both routes to consumer…
