Dairy Crest has announced that Cathedral City has been awarded the Which? Best Buy Cheddar award, after competing in a premium extra-mature and vintage cheddar cheese blind taste test alongside 13 other own-label and branded cheddars. Cathedral City beat the likes of Aldi Pilgrim’s Choice, Wyke Farms, Waitrose and Seriously Strong.
Which?’s panel of cheese experts crowned Cathedral City’s Extra Mature top of the cheeses with an overall score of 83%, describing it as “firm-textured, with a long-lasting aftertaste, making the Cheddar distinctly moreish”. The five Which? cheese experts rated the 14 cheddars on taste, texture, aroma and appearance in a blind taste test.
Will Hemmings, Head of Marketing at Dairy Crest, comments: “We are absolutely delighted to have topped the rankings in the premium cheddar taste test, further cementing Cathedral City’s position as the nation’s favourite cheese. Having invested heavily in the brand this year to ensure it remains number one with consumers, with a relaunch and new campaign ‘Love Cheese, Welcome to the Club’, it is fantastic to see the cheese is still loved for its quality, taste and texture, and not just for its brand recognition.”
Cathedral City is currently worth over £274m and bought by 57% of UK households. It is bigger than all other branded cheeses combined and is now also Britain’s 16th largest grocery brand, maintaining its position from last year.
