Owner Of Wimpy Buys Gourmet Burger Chain

Famous Brands, the South African firm that owns Wimpy, has signed an agreement to acquire the fast-growing premium burger chain Gourmet Burger Kitchen (GBK).

Launched in London back in 2001 by three New Zealanders, the business was acquired in 2010 by the Yellowwoods Group, which that owns the British arm of the Nandos. GBK has since grown to a chain of 75 company-owned restaurants and is now one the market leaders in the premium burger market.

Famous Brands is paying £120m to acquire GBK and plans to open 10 to 15 outlets per annum over the next five years, adding the Brexit uncertainty would not affect its plans.
