In a trading update for the 14 week period to 4 June, WH Smith said its group sales were up 2% with like-for-like sales flat.
In its Travel business, total sales were up 9% and like-for-like sales grew 3%. The group said this performance reflected ongoing investment in the UK business and the improvement in passenger numbers. It added that gross margin increased in line with plan whilst its new store opening programme was progressing well in both the UK and internationally.
Meanwhile, WH Smith’s High Street business continued with its profit focused strategy. Total sales were down 4% and like-for-like sales slipped 3%. The group said that gross margin improvement and cost savings had been delivered in line with its plan.
Looking ahead, the group said it would continue to focus on profitable growth, cash generation and investing in the business to position it well for the future, adding it remained confident in the outcome for the full year.
