Cold Weather Last Week Helped Lift Sales At Waitrose

Total sales at Waitrose rose 1.4% in the week to 30 April as the unsettled weather drew out some unseasonal trends.

The chain said that the cold start to the week saw shoppers turn to comfort food instead of barbecues ahead of the Bank Holiday weekend. As snow fell in some parts of the country, sales of hot pies, meat joints and gravy were said to have soared.

Overall, sales in the ambient category edged up 0.5%, whilst sales in Chilled, Fruit, Vegetables & Horticulture, and Bakery increased 3.5%. The Meat, Fish, Frozen & Dairy category saw sales inch up 0.1%, whilst Home & Leisure rose 3.4%.

At sister chain John Lewis sales over the same week increased by 9.9%, driven by robust growth in all three of its departments – Electricals and Home Technology (+13%), Home (+9.4%) and Fashion (+8.9%).
