Warmer Weather Lift Sales At Waitrose

Waitrose saw its total sales climb 4.2% in the week to 7 May as the year’s first burst of warm weather tempted people outdoors for alfresco dining and entertaining.

Sales of Barbecue meats jumped 41%, while fresh produce saw a 11.8% uplift on last year. Outdoor socialising was also reflected in an increase in sales of gin (up 15%) and rosé wine (up 39%). Meanwhile, ice and ice cream sales climbed 60% and 56%, respectively.

Overall, sales in the ambient category were up 2.6%%, whilst sales in Chilled, Fruit, Vegetables & Horticulture, and Bakery increased 7.2%. The Meat, Fish, Frozen & Dairy category saw sales rise 5.9%, whilst Home & Leisure rose 5.9%.

At sister chain John Lewis, sales increased 11.6%, boosted by extra trade on Bank Holiday Monday.
