Total sales at Waitrose in the seven days to 25 June were down by 0.6% to £125.42m on the same week last year. The group said that comparisons were impacted by last year’s warmer weather and a period of high profile marketing activity to coincide with the launch of its ‘Pick Your Own Offers’ scheme.
However, Waitrose said that beer sales increased almost 9%, boosted by the Euros and England playing rugby against Australia. It added that its recently launched range of Omega 3 enriched chicken is already seeing strong sales with the range now representing almost 6% of total poultry sales.
At sister chain John Lewis, sales climbed 7.3% as trade was boosted by the start of its clearance sale.
