Superdrug has revealed that its operating profit in the year to 26 December 2015 jumped by 62.4% to £62.2m, boosted by strong makeup sales and further expansion online.
Overall revenue increased by 5.4% to £1.1bn with like-for-like sales climbing 6.6%, compared to a 4.7% rise the previous year. Sales of makeup and beauty accessories rose 11% with the fragrance category also said to have performed well.
The retailer, which is part of the A.S. Watson Group, saw online sales increase by over 50%, driven by services including its Online Doctor service. 2015 also saw Superdrug.com offer delivery to customers in the Republic of Ireland for the first time.
Meanwhile, the group opened seven new outlets during the year and continued to invest in refurbishing its 787-strong store estate. In-store health and beauty services were also expanded with 200 outlets now offering eyebrow shaping and nail treatments. Superdrug also now offers health services such as travel vaccinations in 41 stores, as well as nurse clinics in 24 outlets.
Peter Macnab, Chief Executive of A.S. Watson Health & Beauty UK, said: “We have had a strong year and are pleased with the company’s performance. We believe the service offered in our stores is key, whether it’s our experts offering beauty and health services, or advice given about the latest products.
“Looking to the future our strategy remains to offer customers everyday accessible health and beauty, giving them the products they are looking for at great prices, in a vibrant store environment.”
