Crampton is currently Managing Director of the Buying Group at the Co-op, a role which he has held since 2015, representing the eight largest Co-ops’ joint interests in grocery retail buying. Prior to this, he spent over seven years at Sainsbury’s where he undertook a number of commercial roles, including General Manager of Petrol, News & Mags, Tobacco and Kiosk.

Jonathan Miller, Chief Executive of McColl’s, said: “His background with the multiple grocers and his extensive experience in convenience and food retail will be a tremendous benefit to our business as we further strengthen our neighbourhood convenience offer.”

Crampton, who will join the company in the autumn, added: “I look forward to working with Jonathan and the wider team to capitalise on the many opportunities available to the company in the convenience market.”

Earlier this year, McColl’s kicked off a full product range review process to get the most out of its supply deal with Morrisons.  It has also begun trialling the Morrisons Daily format with some its stores.

NAM Implications:
  • Richard has the profile and experience to make it work for McColl’s..
  • Best for NAMs to anticipate a new focus on output…
  • And propose accordingly.
