Amazon Hails Record-Breaking Prime Day

Amazon has trumpeted the success of its latest Prime Day, stating it was the largest shopping event in its history. Over the two days (15-16 July), sales were said to have surpassed the previous Black Friday and Cyber Monday combined.

Shoppers around world purchased more than 175 million items during the sale for members of its Prime scheme.

As well as strong demand for Amazon devices, such as Echo Dot and Fire TV, UK shoppers focused on deals in the wine, beauty, PC and home categories.  The best-selling products in the UK included the Sony PlayStation Classic Console, the Oral-B SmartSeries Electric Toothbrush, and the Shark Vacuum Cleaner.

“Every year, we look forward to offering Prime members great deals across everything they need from homeware and fashion to the latest in tech and our own devices,” said Doug Gurr, UK Country Manager, Amazon. “

“This year we’re thrilled that members in the UK had access to more deals than ever before, helping make Prime Day 2019, the biggest global shopping event in Amazon history.”

A host of retailers have been running their own sales this week to capitalise on the hype created by the well-publicised Amazon event.

Chris Elliott, Insight Manager at Edge by Ascential, commented: “It seems that retailers have made strong attempts to challenge the might of Amazon during Prime Day this year, with Currys and Very leading the charge. However, Amazon’s size and rapid response makes it difficult to compete directly, and Amazon’s growing global presence, extended deal times and aggressive pricing tactics look set to ensure that it will continue its year-on-year tradition of having its best Prime Day ever.”
