Morrisons To Extend Local Meat & Fish Ranges And Offer Shopping Discount To Farmers

Morrisons will next week open a summer ‘BBQ and Steak Bar’ and ‘BBQ and Seafood Bar’ to help struggling British farmers and fishermen. These will offer customers a wider range of local fresh meat and fish.

With demand curtailed by the closure of restaurants and other caterers during the lockdown, industry prices for certain foods have fallen dramatically. Morrisons highlighted that meat and fish producers have been unable to sell certain products – including high-quality steaks, joints, whole fish and shellfish – that might have been destined for the restaurant trade.

The steak and seafood bars will offer a wider selection of steaks, joints, and seafood.

Meanwhile, Morrisons has also announced that it will be giving farmers a discount on their grocery purchases in its stores as a thank you for “feeding the nation”.

The 5% discount will be offered to the 2,700 farmers that supply Morrisons. A discount card will be sent in the post to those eligible, including meat, egg, dairy and fruit & veg farmers.

The discount is valid from today until 12 July when it will be reviewed.

David Potts, Chief Executive of Morrisons, said: “This is a difficult time for the nation and it’s a very difficult time for farmers and fishermen. We’re the biggest supermarket customer for British farmers and they continue to provide very good quality British food in the face of very real challenges. We want to show our thanks for all their work in feeding the nation and encourage our customers to buy British food.”
