Dobbies Starts Reopening Garden Centres

Dobbies has become the latest retailer to re-open its doors as the government begins to relax the lockdown restrictions.

All 54 of its garden centres began trading today with a range of social distancing and safety measures in place similar to those used by DIY outlets and supermarkets. These include limiting customer numbers and operating a queuing system outside stores with two metre markers. In addition, hand sanitising and trolley cleaning stations will be placed at all store entrances.

Meanwhile, staff and customers will be protected by plastic screens at checkouts and PPE will be provided.

Although Dobbies’ in-store restaurants will remain temporarily closed, the company will start offering a takeaway menu from 15 May.

Graeme Jenkins, Chief Executive of Dobbies, said: “We have taken care to ensure we are following guidance provided by the Government, British Retail Consortium and Horticultural Trade Association to re-open responsibly.

“Our team is well prepared, social distancing measures are in place and we look forward to welcoming customers back into our stores across England.”

NAM Implications:
  • All the advantages of supermarkets having shown the way.
  • Including queueing outside in one of the driest few months in years.
