Aldi Pushing Ahead With Store Opening Programme

Aldi has revealed that it expects to create nearly 4,000 new jobs in the UK this year as it pushes ahead with plans to open an average of one new store a week between now and Christmas.

The supermarket, which currently has more than 890 stores and employs around 35,000 people across the UK, has already created 2,800 new jobs this year and plans to create at least 1,200 more – in addition to the thousands of temporary roles that it made available during the peak of the pandemic.

Aldi is opening new stores in towns and cities such as Sandhurst, Bristol and Edinburgh in months ahead as it pushes towards reaching its target of 1,200 stores in the UK by 2025.

The group highlighted that it offers industry-leading pay with it looking to recruit store assistants, managers cleaners, and apprentices.

Giles Hurley, Chief Executive of Aldi UK, said: “As much as the disruption of the past few months has been challenging, it has also reminded us that there are still hundreds of towns across the UK where shoppers don’t have access to Aldi’s award-winning quality products and unbeatable prices.”

He added: “I’ve been very proud of the tireless work my colleagues have put into feeding the nation. To continue doing this and meet our goals of making Aldi accessible to even more shoppers, we will need thousands more amazing colleagues across the country. I look forward to welcoming each and every one of them to the team.”

Early this month, Lidl also revealed that it will be opening one store per week in the UK over the next six months, creating up to 1,000 new jobs.

NAM Implications:
  • A post-lockdown no brainer for Aldi (and Lidl).
  • Even more so an opportunity for those suppliers on the outside to jump aboard…
