Sainsbury’s Continues Roll-Out Of New Convenience Format

Sainsbury’s has opened its latest ‘On the Go’ format convenience store in London’s Leicester Square.

The 4,500 sq. ft. Sainsbury’s Local offers a range of fresh food and grocery products aimed at tourists, workers and local residents. Customers will also be able to buy freshly baked pizza from an in-store oven, drinks from a self-service coffee machine and orange juicer, and products from Sushi Gourmet. There is also ‘grab and go’ food station at the front of the store and a click & collect service for Argos.

The retailer stated that the layout of the store had been designed with busy customers in mind, with more space allocated to the checkout area “for a faster experience”.

Sainsbury’s first On the Go format store opened at its Mansion House store in London’s Square Mile in February to tap into the latest consumption trends in the convenience sector.

The retailer has stated that it plans to roll-out the concept to other city locations with at least seven more stores expected to be converted to the format across Edinburgh, Bristol, Glasgow and London this year. Sainsbury’s has suggested at least 130 sites in busy urban areas could be suitable.
