Just days after paying over $5bn for Bountiful’s main brands, Nestlé’s Health Science division has agreed on a deal to acquire functional hydration brand Nuun.
Founded in the US in 2004, the company is said to have pioneered the separation of electrolyte replacement from carbohydrates in the sports beverage market. It now makes a range of effervescent tablets and powders containing additional minerals and vitamins for energy, relaxation and well-being.
Nestlé stated that the Nunn range will complement its Health Science unit’s existing portfolio of active lifestyle nutrition brands.
“Everyday, health-conscious consumers are becoming more aware of how functional hydration products can add to their overall well-being as well as support them during exercise by replacing the minerals that the body loses. That growing awareness is reflected in the steady growth of the category,” said Greg Behar, CEO of Nestlé Health Science.
“Nuun is a leader in the fast-growing functional hydration category with its high-quality, clean, plant-based products. We look forward to combining our companies’ expertise to bring Nuun to more people around the world.”
Financial details of the deal not being disclosed.
Amid growing consumer demand for health-oriented products, Nestlé has been expanding its presence in the sector through acquisitions. Last year, the Health Science division bought Aimmune Therapeutics and IM HealthScience. The unit’s sales increased 9.5% in the first quarter of 2021 as consumers worried about their health during the pandemic continued to buy supplements and vitamins.
