Tesco’s online shopping operation is back up and running today after services were disrupted over the weekend by a cyber-attack.
Attempts to compromise Tesco’s systems were made on Friday night and into Saturday morning, with shoppers first reporting issues with tracking deliveries and an inability to make changes to orders.
A statement from Tesco on Sunday said: “Since yesterday, we’ve been experiencing disruption to our online grocery website and app.
“An attempt was made to interfere with our systems which has caused problems with the search function on the site. We’re working hard to fully restore all services and apologise for the inconvenience.”
The retailer stated that there was no reason to believe that customer data had been compromised.
With Tesco taking 1.3m online orders a week and making annual online grocery revenues of more than £6bn, an outage for two days could have cost the supermarket millions.
NAM Implications:
- Apart from the inconvenience…
- …the issue is increased uncertainty in uncertain times…
- …compared with ‘Amazon reliability’.
- Meanwhile, Tesco reacted fast…
- …and hopefully minimised damage.
