Asda Set To Open First Standalone Convenience Stores

Following rumours in recent months, Asda has confirmed that it is launching a standalone convenience store format.

The first ‘Asda Express’ outlet will open in Sutton Coldfield on 8 November, followed by a second in Tottenham Hale, London, on 6 December.

Asda stated that it plans to launch a further 30 sites next year as part of a “test & learn” approach to developing its convenience model and drive to become the UK’s second-largest supermarket.

The group noted that with sales in the convenience channel forecast to grow by 13% to over £50bn by 2027 (IGD), it sees a significant opportunity to win market share in a sector where it currently has a limited presence.

The first two Asda Express stores will be situated in residential areas and stock around 3,000 products, including a range of fresh, ambient and chilled groceries. They will also sell products from the chain’s premium Extra Special range and a selection of beers, wines and spirits.

Meanwhile, a range of hot and cold ‘food for now’ options will be available from Asda and partner brands, including Leon. Both stores will also offer ‘toyou’ parcel collection and return services and a grocery rapid delivery service through Uber Eats.

“The launch of our first two Asda Express convenience stores is a landmark moment for our great business and a key step on our journey to bring Asda to more customers in more communities right across the UK,” said Mohsin Issa, Asda’s co-owner.

“The stores have been designed to cater for a broad range of customer needs – whether that’s popping in for a pint of milk, grabbing a spot of lunch on the go, or buying the fresh ingredients to cook dinner from scratch. We’re confident customers will find everything they need in these stores and enjoy the convenience of having a new type of Asda store on their doorstep. “

The new Asda Express stores are wholly owned and operated by Asda. The retailer stated that they are separate from its Asda On the Move convenience sites, which are located on 50+ petrol station forecourts operated by the EG Group. They are also separate from the 132 forecourt stores that Asda is currently in the process of acquiring from the Co-op.

The performance of Asda’s main supermarket business has improved in recent months as new value initiatives help attract customers through its doors.
