The supermarket opened its first checkout-free store to the public in 2021, just months after Amazon entered the physical grocery store market in the UK with its hi-tech Fresh format.

Tesco expanded trials of the GetGo concept at the end of last year with the addition of a new hybrid format based on customer feedback. As well as allowing customers to shop and pay without scanning a product via a combination of cameras and sensors, the new stores offer the option of using a self-service or attended checkout if the customer prefers.

“Tesco is leading the way in innovative technology to ensure convenience for our customers and improve customer experience,” said Henna Husain, the store manager at the new GetGo store in Birmingham.

“I am very excited and proud to be leading the first Tesco GetGo store outside of London with my team.”

GetGo’s London sites are located in High Holborn, Chiswell Street, and Fulham.
