Tesco has announced the rollout of a new policy that allows all its employees to request part-time or flexible working hours from their first day at the company.
This change has been implemented almost a year ahead of an expected update in the law by the UK government that will give all employees the right to flexible working from day one. Under current employment law, workers have to wait for six months before making a request.
The new Tesco policy means that all its full-time advertised positions will be available as flexible or full-time, and a range of different part-time or flexible working options can be discussed across all roles.
The change covers more than 300,000 Tesco staff, from the shop floor to its offices.
James Goodman, Tesco UK People Director, said: “We think giving people the right to start a conversation about flexible working from their first day, or even before they start work for Tesco, is the right thing to do to give colleagues the opportunity for a healthy work-life balance.
“We aim to create a positive culture at Tesco where managers will do as much as they can to facilitate these requests for flexibility.”
