Shoppers have rated Aldi as the nation’s most popular supermarket, according to new polling data for the third quarter from YouGov.
In the consumer poll, the discounter ranked ahead of the traditional Big Four supermarkets, as well as M&S and Lidl, to take the top spot. The ranking is based on the percentage of people who have a positive opinion of a supermarket chain.
Richard Thornton, Communications Director at Aldi, said: “Low prices never go out of fashion which is why Aldi is – and will continue to be – loved by so many.
“Our unbeatable combination of high-quality products at low prices has helped us attract around a million new customers in the past year alone, but we’re not stopping there. We’re investing £1.4bn over the next two years to help bring us closer to even more households.”
Meanwhile, in separate consumer research, Lidl has been named the ‘most trusted’ supermarket in the UK.
Ranking in second place overall, behind B&M, in the Retail Trust Index by the Ethical Commerce Alliance (ECA), Lidl was far ahead of its competitors, with Tesco the next nearest supermarket in 15th place and Aldi further back in 21st place. Meanwhile, Waitrose and M&S were in 28th and 29th place respectively.
Georgina Hall, Head of Communications & CSR at Lidl GB, commented: “Households have had to contend with an incredibly volatile last few years, but throughout it all, we at Lidl GB have continued to show that we’re truly on the side of shoppers and have done everything in our power to ensure that they continue to have access to the best quality products at the lowest possible prices.
“We’re a business built on trust and transparency, and it’s humbling to see that this has been reflected in the results of the Retail Trust Index.”
NAM Implications:
- Trust, so difficult to build, so easy to demolish…
- And to think a discounter wins over the mults.
- A feature of the new norm.
