Aldi Hikes Pay Again To Industry-Leading £12 Per Hour

Aldi claims to have become the first major supermarket in the UK to guarantee all its store and warehouse staff at least £12.00 an hour.

The new minimum rate, which increases to £13.55 within the M25, makes Aldi the first supermarket to offer rates in line with the Real Living Wage that was set by the Living Wage Foundation in October this year. The new rates take effect from 1 February next year.

The discounter’s store assistants will see their pay rise further to £12.95 nationally, and £13.85 within the M25, based on the length of service.

Commenting on the £67m investment into staff pay, Giles Hurley, Chief Executive of Aldi UK and Ireland, said: “Just as we promise to provide the best value to our customers, we are also committed to being the highest-paying supermarket in the sector.

“We are incredibly proud of every single member of Team Aldi and this is a way of thanking them for all their hard work over the past year. We believe our colleagues are the best in the sector, and they play a huge part in making Aldi what it is today.”

NAM Implications:
  • If best pay equals best staff…
  • …Aldi are building another competitive edge.
  • Apart from building kudos by meeting Minimum Living wage conditions ahead of schedule.
  • Meaning those suppliers not working with Aldi may need to reconsider?
