Heineken Cutting Strength Of John Smith’s Bitter, Saving Millions In VAT

The brewing giant behind Britain’s best-selling bitter has been ridiculed over claims a move to cut alcohol strength is designed to boost health.

Heineken is reducing the alcohol by volume (ABV) in its John Smith’s Extra Smooth from 3.6% to 3.4%.

The reduction appears small. However, it delivers a multi-million-pound reduction in duty as it brings the bitter down below a key tax threshold of 3.5%.
