Following a flurry of pay rises by its rivals in recent weeks, Aldi has announced plans to increase the hourly wage for its store staff for the second time this year as part of a commitment to remain the UK’s best-paying supermarket.
From 1 June, the discounter’s national minimum rate will increase to £12.40 an hour for Store Assistants and Deputy Store Managers, rising to £13.65 for those based within the M25.
This follows the last rise that came into effect on 1 February, when Aldi’s shopworkers saw their hourly rates increase to a sector-leading £12 nationally and £13.55 in London. However, Lidl, Sainsbury’s and Co-op have since matched the £12 rate while M&S and Tesco will do so from next month.
Aldi’s latest increase takes its investment in pay so far this year to £79m.
“We firmly believe that our colleagues are the best in the business, so it is only right that they remain the best-paid and we are committed to never being beaten on pay by any other supermarket,” said Giles Hurley, Chief Executive Officer of Aldi UK and Ireland.
“Our Store Operations colleagues play an integral part in our ever-increasing popularity among shoppers and our continued investment in their pay is another way to thank them for the role they play in making Aldi what it is today.”
