Sainsbury’s has unveiled its first shop in an airport. The new Local outlet at Edinburgh Airport is located before security and will be open 24 hours a day, serving people passing through both arrivals and departures.
The new convenience store is part of a major revamp of the food, drink and shopping options on offer at Edinburgh Airport.
The product range in the store includes meal deals, fresh bread and cakes, fruit and veg, meat, fish and meal solutions, as well as a bespoke Scottish section showcasing locally sourced lines. There is also a click & collect service in the store, enabling travellers to pick up online orders from Argos, Habitat and Tu Clothing.
“We’re very excited to launch Sainsbury’s Local in a whole new setting for the first time today with the opening of our Edinburgh Airport store,” said Patrick Dunne, Sainsbury’s Director of Property, Procurement & EV Ventures.
“We want to build on the resounding success of our other travel hub stores, for example in UK train stations, and we’ll be listening closely to feedback from customers in the coming weeks to learn more about what they want to see from this kind of Local. We then hope to bring Sainsbury’s unbeatable combination of outstanding value, quality food and great service to more airport locations in the UK.”
Sainsbury’s operates 100 stores in Scotland, a combination of supermarkets and Locals, as well as around 60 Argos outlets.
NAM Implications:
- Sainsbury’s rarely do things in ‘ones’.
- So, anticipate a roll-out to other UK airports.
- So, perhaps worth tweaking your whole Travel Retail strategy…
