Lidl Matches Aldi’s New £13 An Hour Pay Rate

Just over two weeks after Aldi announced it would become the first supermarket in the UK to pay store staff at least £13.00 an hour, Lidl has pledged to match its key rival.

From 1st September, Lidl will increase its entry-level hourly pay from £12.75 to £13.00 nationally, rising to £13.95 with length of service. Staff working in the discounter’s stores within the M25 will see their pay rise from £14.00 to £14.35, increasing to £14.65 with length of service.

The uplift will be Lidl’s fifth pay rise in two years, taking its investment in pay to over £70m and maintaining its lead over the traditional supermarket multiples.

Stephanie Rogers, Chief People Officer at Lidl GB, commented: “Over the last two years, we’ve held our spot as the fastest growing bricks-and-mortar supermarket. This continued success is made possible because of the ongoing efforts of our colleagues, including Customer Assistants, Shift Managers, Warehouse Operatives and Cleaners, whose commitment is greatly appreciated. In recognition of their contribution, we continue to ensure we are market leading on pay.”

NAM Implications:
  • Think of the impact of Aldi & Lidl’s pay initiative on those mulling a switch from rival retailers.
  • To say nothing of those contemplating a role in retail…
  • (and the resulting impact on mults seeking the best staff)
