Asda has launched the latest phase of its Express convenience store rollout programme, following the opening of a new site in Castleford.
The outlet is the first of up to 20 new Express stores set to open across the UK before the end of the year. The move follows a pause to focus on converting the 469 sites Asda acquired from the Co-op and EG Group.
The group noted that expansion will strengthen its presence in high-footfall urban areas, residential neighbourhoods, and transport hubs – locations where it has traditionally had less of a footprint.
Located on Holywell Lane, the new Asda Express Castleford store has been transformed from a former pub into a modern convenience store. It offers over 3,000 branded and own-label products, including fresh, ambient and chilled groceries, as well as a selection of beers, wines and spirits.
The store also hosts a variety of services, including a Costa Coffee Machine, an ATM, and Amazon collections & returns, as well as on-demand food delivery options such as Uber Eats, Just Eat and Deliveroo.
As announced last week, the store will feature electronic shelf labels (ESLs) that are expected to help simplify operations for its staff and enhance customer service.

Almost 500 Asda Express stores are expected to be open by the end of the year, with a “strong pipeline” of new stores planned for 2026.
