Carrefour To Test Subscription-Based Grocery Discounts

French supermarket giant Carrefour will start testing a new subscription service this month.

Called ‘Carrefour +’, it gives customers 15% off products from more than 20 Carrefour brands, or over 7,000 products, for €5.99 a month (€4.93 for Pass card holders), with no minimum purchase levels. It can also be used alongside other offers.

Initially, the service will be rolled out to 21 stores in the Rouen region of France and will be available across all its store formats (hypermarkets, supermarkets and convenience stores), as well as online. If successful, Carrefour intends to roll it out more widely in 2022.

The subscription service will be exclusively available for holders of Carrefour loyalty cards, which can be obtained for free. The group highlighted that it is commitment-free and can be cancelled at any time.

Morgane Weill, Executive Strategy Director for the Group and France & Market France said: “This subscription service is fully in line with two of the strategic priorities outlined in the Carrefour 2022 plan: showcase our ecosystem, ensuring that all of our customers everywhere have access to the same benefits, particularly in digital, and helping to deliver the food transition for everyone with the help of a highly advantageous offering on Carrefour’s own brands.”

She added: “Co-developed with our customers, this value proposition will evolve on the basis of their feedback so we can adapt it to better meet their needs”.

Tesco has a subscription service called Clubcard Plus, which costs £7.99 a month. However, this only gives a 10% discount on two shops a month.

NAM Implications:
  • Needs-based formulae, tested at the Carrefour-consumer interface, with no strings attached.
  • A no-brainer rollout inevitable…
  • A pointer for all…
