Sainsbury’s Switches Laundry Detergent Packaging From Plastic To Cardboard

Sainsbury’s has launched new laundry liquid detergent packaging designed to help consumers reduce plastic at home.

The change across all own-label 750ml laundry detergents sees sleeved plastic bottles replaced with cardboard cartons. The products are available across Sainsbury’s tropical super concentrated, bio super concentrated, non-bio super concentrated, colour super concentrated and lavender super concentrated lines.

Customers can recycle the new packaging at kerbside or deposit the packaging at recycling banks.

The new packaging is expected to save around 22 tonnes of plastic annually. The cartons, which are 35% lighter than the original packaging, will also take 13 lorries off the road annually, reducing carbon emissions of the range by 50% and contributing to the retailer’s target to be net zero in its own operations by 2035.

The laundry liquid has also been reformulated and is now super concentrated.

The development is the latest in a string of plastic reductions across Sainsbury’s household goods range as part of its commitment to halve its use of own-label plastic packaging by 2025.
