Shicken Unveils First Allergen-Free Plant-Based Meat Recipe

Asian plant-based meals challenger SHICKEN is launching what it claims is a “category-first” plant-based meat recipe that is free from the top 14 allergens and made using British ingredients.

shicken-tikka-kebabMade in the brand’s newly certified allergen-free site in Kent, SHICKEN’s new next-generation plant-based chicken has changed from a soy and wheat-based recipe to pea proteins, solely sourced from peas farmed in East Anglia.

Shicken’s market-first recipe is launching in Costco with its Tikka Kebab line and will be phased throughout its entire range of curry and kebab dishes across retail, D2C and Foodservice in the coming weeks.

The brand stated that the move to pea protein will improve product taste and texture, whilst becoming allergen-free is part of SHICKEN’s strategy to make plant-based food more inclusive, removing consumption barriers around dietary requirements. The brand noted that its commitment to sustainability was also a key driver behind the switch to home-grown ingredients to reduce its carbon footprint.

SHICKEN Co-Founder, Parm Bains, said: “As a business, we are committed to making plant-based food delicious, inclusive, and ethical. Our next-generation recipe has been developed to taste even better and opens the SHICKEN range up for everyone to enjoy – whatever their dietary requirements are.

“Sustainable sourcing is essential to the future of food and the planet, and reducing the food miles of our ingredients is a key part of our mission and purpose.

“We exist to provide consumers with the options to make good food choices that are a win-win, by providing convenient, restaurant-quality authentic Asian plant-based meals, supporting animal welfare and minimizing the impact on the environment through a more sustainable range, with full traceability from farm to fork.”
