Overherd, a Yorkshire-based start-up, is aiming to make plant-based milk more sustainable by offering the UK’s first oat milk powder.
Standard plant-based milks usually contain over 90% water, which adds weight and packaging requirements to products sold in stores. Overherd’s ‘just add water’ solution allows consumers to add the water at home, which significantly reduces the amount of packaging needed. The product comes in a lightweight recyclable pouch that is capable of producing 8 litres of oat milk.
Sandy Eyre, Overherd’s founder, said: “Plant milk is a bit like blackcurrant squash – it wouldn’t make sense to buy squash pre-mixed. It would be super bulky and packaging intensive – we think the same applies to plant milk, which is why we focus on the oat concentrate, the part that provides the flavour and nutrition.
“Oat milk is 90% water, so we focus on the 10% that isn’t water, the bit that contains all the flavour, texture, and nutrients. Users add the water at home instead, which saves packaging, carbon emissions and food waste.
“The environmental impact of dairy production is becoming more well-known, and it’s great to see so many switching to plant milks. However, we think you can do one better in terms of sustainability.”
Overherd has launched the product on its direct-to-consumer website.
NAM Implications:
- If Overherd have cracked the issue of the variable taste of domestic water…
- …this has got to be a winner.
- Complete with the Innovator’s Advantage to boot.
