Asda Making Rapid Progress With ‘On The Move’ Roll-Out

Just two months after reaching the 100-store milestone for its ‘On the Move’ forecourt convenience format, Asda opened its 150th site this week.

Developed in partnership with EG Group, the landmark puts the group on target to have 200 of the roadside convenience stores operating by the end of 2023.

The 150th Asda on The Move store is located at Baynards Green Services in Bicester, Oxfordshire and will be the third such site in the local area. The 24-hour store stocks over 1,300 branded and own-label products, and includes Greggs and Leon foodservice concessions.

James Laws, Senior Director Wholesale & Convenience at Asda, said: “The opening of the 150th Asda On the Move store marks a significant milestone in our ongoing expansion into the convenience market, to bring Asda’s value and great products to more customers across the UK. Through this partnership with EG Group, we’re able to cater to rising demand from customers to pick up essentials quickly and conveniently or grab a treat whilst they’re refuelling.”

Junaid Manjra, Head of Convenience Retail at EG Group, added: “We have been very encouraged by the response of customers to Asda On the Move, and the launch of this milestone store demonstrates how EG’s partnership with Asda is driving further success.”

Asda is also expanding its presence in the convenience channel through its new Express format, which launched before Christmas. The supermarket plans to open 30 new Express stores this year, extending this to 300 sites by the end of 2026 in urban and residential locations.

Asda also acquired 132 convenience stores and attached petrol filling stations from the Co-op Group last year. The company recently offered to dispose of 13 of the petrol stations to secure clearance from the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA).
