Co-op Offering Big Discount To Thank Customers For Support Following Cyber Attack

Members of the Co-op are being offered a 25% discount on a £40 shop as a “thank you” gesture following the recent cyber attack that impacted stock levels in its stores and disrupted payments. Hackers also accessed some customer data, including names and addresses of its members.

The convenience retailer stated that it wanted to express gratitude to its 6.5 million members who supported the business during the incident as its 2,300 food stores returned to usual trading. The offer runs for one week from today and is also available to new members who join during this period.

Co-op noted that the discount comes as it switches all its marketing activity back on and launches a national summer advertising campaign.

Matt Hood, Managing Director of Co-op Food, said: “I’m very proud that, thanks to the work of our colleagues, we are very near to making a full and complete recovery from the recent cyber attack on our Co-op, and I’m delighted to see our stores looking back to normal and being able to serve our shoppers and communities.

“We are so grateful to our member owners for their support and patience with us during what was a very difficult time and hope this gesture of appreciation goes a little way to showing them our thanks, with more value rewards to come over the summer. Co-op stores are now full of summer products, providing great value and good quality food and drink, so there is lots to choose from for our members to use the thank you offer.”

NAM Implications:
  • Given the relatively low basket size in Co-op shopping…
  • …£40 may be a big ask.
  • But this being retail, ‘try it and see?’
  • Meanwhile, great that the Co-op recovered so well and so fast from the cyber attack.
  • A pointer for all…
