The Co-op has revealed that its £3 face covering range has seen a surge in demand to become the fastest-selling items across its stores, outselling everyday essentials such as milk, bread and eggs.
Amid growing evidence that face masks can help prevent the spread of the coronavirus, the convenience retailer began selling the non-medical graded face coverings at the end of May in all of its 2,600 stores.
The Co-op has now secured millions more items to meet demand and the range will shortly be available across selected Co-op stores on Deliveroo and the retailer’s online shop in selected postcodes.
The products include a five-pack disposable non-medical face covering and a re-useable non-medical face covering that can be washed up to 20 times.
Joseph Turner, Co-op Buying Manager, said: “We know it’s important to reserve valuable PPE for health and care workers so these are not suitable for medical use but have been designed with customers in mind and are just one way we can be careful, along with social distancing and washing our hands. Following the demand, we have secured more stock to ensure we can continue to serve the nation.”
