Positive Christmas For Co-ops

Two more Co-ops have reported robust trading figures for the Christmas period, suggesting more consumers used their local convenience store when shopping during the festive season.

Central England Co-op saw its sales grow 3.5% over the three weeks ending 4 January – outperforming many of its larger competitors and the market as a whole.

The Society, which has over 240 food stores across 16 counties, highlighted that it saw increased sales in fresh produce and protein ranges, food-to-go and party food such as pizzas and ice cream.

Debbie Robinson, Chief Executive at Central England Co-op, said: “I am delighted to say that the hard work and commitment of our colleagues, coupled with great products and planning, has allowed us to record positive sales figures over the festive period.”

Meanwhile, the Lincolnshire Co-op has revealed that it saw a 7.2% rise in food store sales over the three weeks to 4 January.  The Society highlighted that it had seen strong sales (+35%) of Christmas puddings and products in its ‘Love Local’ range.

Chief Retail Officer Mark Finn said: “We’re delighted to buck the national trend, both with the popularity of the traditional Christmas pud and with our positive sales performance.

“It’s a great achievement in a tough market. It shows that our customers appreciate our colleagues and the service they provide and the quality of our products, especially those sourced locally.”

Earlier this month, the Southern Co-op reported a 4.7% increase in like-for-like sales over the four week period to 29 December.
