After its announcement last week that its current Chief Executive John Brodie will retire next August, Scotmid has revealed that its Chief Operating Officer Karen Scott will take over the role.
Scott, a former head of SemiChem, has 36 years’ experience in retail – 22 of those with the Co-op society. She will remain in her current role until May next year, when she will become Chief Executive designate, while Brodie transitions into retirement over the summer.
Scott said: “It really is an honour to be appointed to this position. It is a huge responsibility to take over from John next year.
“Obviously it is a major step up to be CEO, but I am ready for all the challenges that lie ahead.”
Jim Watson, President of Scotmid, added: “Karen has impressed the board over a number of years with her work at SemiChem and retail in general. She further enhanced the board’s positive impression of her during the interview process and we had no hesitation in making this appointment.”
Scotmid is Scotland’s largest independent co-operative. Last week, it announced a strong rise in first-half profits and sales after its food convenience division delivered a “solid” performance.
NAM Implications:
- A short period of adjustment…
- (shorter than usual, given previous experience with the society)
- And obviously open to ideas on how to build on this year’s strong rise in first-half profits and sales.
